Granddaughter Shelby celebrated her 14th birthday today, July 18, 2015 with a party at her house. She broke with tradition; instead of birthday cake, she had birthday pie. Three of them! She made a Snicker/Caramel Apple pie, her aunt Kelly made a fudge pie, and courtesy of Mrs. Smith, an apple pie. Each pie was to die for, and we just might since we sampled all of them. In another break from tradition, Shelby also requested her Grandpa’s yummy home made vanilla ice cream to go with the pies. We sang the Birthday Song, she blew out 14 candles [all in one breath ~ I didn’t even have time to snap that picture] and after we stuffed ourselves with pie and ice cream, she opened her gifts ~ beautiful clothes and shoes, iTunes gift card, the novel Paper Towns, a Daryl Dixon keychain and a home made card from her brother, Elijah, with a dollar attached. Yesterday, she and her mom went to Nashville to shop, and they visited the Bluebird Café, something Shelby has been wanting to do for a long time, but tickets were sold out and the lines were long, so they plan to go again another time. She had a fun birthday, and we loved helping her celebrate. Happy Birthday, Shelby!! Our first grandchild and only granddaughter, you are so special to us in so many ways. We love you always!! Write Your Story On My Heart

Tonight was granddaughter Shelby’s last chorus concert at Avery Trace Middle School. 8th grade is winding down for her. She’ll be moving on to high school next year. Hard to believe! Where has the time gone?

They performed a lot of modern songs that involved an array of emotions, but mostly it was all about friendship, changes and saying goodbye. Their last song was Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing.

Shelby is part of a small group of 8th graders who took part in chorus all four years of middle school. I think she plans on being in chorus in high school. I hope so. She has an awesome voice.

We’ve enjoyed watching you in all your chorus concerts, Shelby.  Looking forward to your next chapter as I continue to write your story on my heart. Love you and proud of you!

Thrilled To Be Thirteen! Happy Birthday, Shelby!

Granddaughter Shelby turned 13 years old on Friday, July 18. She’s been looking forward to this day probably from the moment she turned 12 last year. It’s an exciting time for her, to say the least.

Today her family helped her celebrate this major milestone in her life with a birthday party at her house.

Her dad always lights her birthday candles.

We sang the Birthday Song and she blew them all out at once with some encouragement from her brother Elijah.

She served up yummy homemade punch.

Shelby made her own birthday cake this year ~ a red and blue Jell-O cake with whipped cream frosting. It was delicious!

She enjoyed opening her gifts. One of the things she requested was markers. She loves to make art.

She also received some stylin’ clothes from her Mimi and Papa Myers. And even got a gift of money from her brother from his own stash. She also got money from her great aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She didn’t expect to get a cardboard playhouse that she can decorate. This present cracked her up. Her grandpa couldn’t resist getting her one because she enjoys hanging out inside of her cousin Knox’s cardboard playhouse when she’s at his house. She mentioned that she’d like to have one for herself (better be careful what you wish for).

A girl can never have too many colors of nail polish ~ a gift from Aunt Kelly.

The great thing about a summer birthday is a giant water slide, and thanks to a generous mom and dad, this has become a birthday party tradition for both Shelby and Elijah.

All the kids (and big kid Holly) had a blast on this thing, especially since the rain finally stopped and the sun came out. More birthday fun than pint sized peeps should be allowed to have. What a fun party! It was great fun watching Shelby celebrate her 13th!

This is Shelby’s artwork on her bedroom door she created in honor of her own special day. She worked on this for days. I think it’s awesome. Shelby is an awesome young lady ~ a teenager! How can that possibly be?! Her grandpa and I love this sweet girl to pieces ~ so blessed to have her in our lives. Happy 13th Birthday, Shelby!! Hope all your birthday wishes and dreams come true!

BECAUSE I’M HAPPY! SCHOOL’S OUT!

Today was the last day of 7th grade for granddaughter Shelby. Needless to say, she’s happy because it’s done. Here she is posing with her fave after school drink.

Big smile but tearful eyes ~ she’s sad because she had to say goodbye to friends, especially those who she won’t see again because they will be moving away. Bittersweet day for her. 8th grade next year! Wow!

Grandson Elijah spent the last day of 2nd grade at a Nashville Sounds baseball game with his classmates. His friend’s mom snapped this shot of them at the game. They’re team mates on their Diamond Backs baseball team, and they play their last game this evening. I didn’t get to see him today as usual, but I heard he had a good time at the Sounds game. 3rd grade for Elijah next year! He and Shelby have worked hard in school this year and made the awesome grades to prove it. Proud of you two!

SING IT

We went to granddaughter Shelby’s  middle school chorus concert this evening. The kids chose a lot of fun, upbeat tunes, so it was a fun concert.

Some of the songs they performed: ‘Believe’, ‘Man Of Constant Sorrow’ [very well done by the guys], ‘Roar’, ‘Apologize’, and ‘Counting Stars’. Shelby is to the right of the microphone stand, second row from bottom,  in the white scarf.

She looked elegant in her long black dress and lacy scarf. This was something that she just wanted to be over and done with. As for me, I really enjoyed all the songs they performed and the energy they put into them. Children’s voices singing, especially in harmony, always squeeze my heart and put a lump in my throat. Can’t help it. Good job, Chorus! Loved watching you, Shelby!
