HAPPY 36TH BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!

IMG_4310
Daughter Holly turned 36 years old December 16. We celebrated her special day this evening with a birthday dinner at Rib City. From left around the table as related to Holly: hubby Jerry, nephew Knox, sister Kelly, son Elijah, the birthday girl, daughter Shelby and dad Neil
IMG_4311
There’s a song called ‘The Kid Inside’ ~ that’s what this picture makes me think of ~ Holly is always willing to play with the kids
IMG_4318
Her traditional Baskin-Robbins birthday cake ~ chocolate chip ice cream with chocolate cake ~ I can’t even remember when this got started, but it is a tasty tradition ~ With her birthday being nine days before Christmas, she’d always end up with a Christmas-themed cake ~ I think she hated it after a while but lately has embraced those red and green decorations
IMG_4320
You know you’re getting “old” when it takes this many people to light your candles
IMG_4322
Blow out the candles, quick before the cake melts! [Also celebrating with Holly her aunt Jane and uncle Don and cousin Julia who is invisible in this picture, sorry, Julia…] I love Elijah’s expression here

Here she is way back in 1982 blowing out four candles on her Christmas-decorated cake. Dig that ‘Annie’ hat! I remember she wore it the whole day [and night]. Happy birthday, dear daughter, our almost-Christmas baby! You are the best Christmas present we ever received. Your dad and I love you so very much!!

ODE TO JOY: HAPPY 1.0.0. TH BIRTHDAY, JOY ELIZABETH GAILBREATH BROWN!

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were? ~Satchel Paige
IMG_4153
My Aunt Joy Brown celebrates her 100th birthday today!
IMG_4152
A very dear friend of hers has been hosting an annual birthday bash for Aunt Joy for many many years now, and the party has grown until she had to reserve a local popular restaurant to accommodate all Joy’s birthday well-wishers. I think half the town of Gainesboro, Tennessee, turned out this year to help Aunt Joy celebrate this major milestone. Her party was December 1 at Helen’s restaurant. Poems were read in her honor and she received birthday greetings and gifts from several local and state politicians, including the governor.  The Bluegrass duo Dailey and Vincent wrote and performed a song to honor Joy on her special day.  [Jamie Dailey grew up in Gainesboro and has known Joy since his childhood. They are a mutual admiration society to say the least.]
IMG_4158
She entertained us, singing some songs, telling stories and favorite memories, and reading a poem she composed to honor her sweet friend, Jo, who orchestrates these awesome birthday parties.
IMG_4162
And having to hold on to her walker did not deter her from tap dancing to the tune of The Entertainer.
IMG_4168
She shared her memories of seeing soldiers return home to Gainesboro after World War I when she was four years old. [Her sons pictured here, Mike and Tom, call her every day from their homes in Texas and California]
IMG_4171
She recited The Ragged Old Flag, the lyrics to a song written by Johnny Cash, that she performs several times a year at patriotic functions.
IMG_4173
I’ve always said I want to be just like my Aunt Joy when I grow up. She’s had and still has a remarkable life, not only long in years but also rich in the love and respect of her family and friends and rich in faith and love for God. She’s still going strong. I look forward to seeing her tap dance at her party next year. Happy 100th Birthday, Aunt Joy! Wishing you all the best of everything today and always.

HAPPY 3RD BIRTHDAY, KNOX!

IMG_4177
Grandson Knox celebrated his 3rd birthday this evening at his house with family and friends. He loves the TV show Paw Patrol, so that was his party theme this year. He picked out the decorations for his delicious Dairy Queen birthday cake.
IMG_4175
He was super excited all day about his birthday.
IMG_4180
A balloon bouquet from Granny and Grandpa ~ turning 3 is a big deal. He also loves anything Thomas Train and the Cars characters, so those played a big part in his celebration, too.
IMG_4182
Every time someone came through the door [Great Aunt Ann in this case], he ran to greet his party guests.
IMG_4185
Paw Patrol is on a roll!
IMG_4190
Pictures with the cake and his #3 ~ Mom said, Smile, Knox, so he did. He had a lot to smile about today.

We sang the Birthday Song

And he blew out his candle [thank you, Don Foy, for this great shot]

The DQ cake was scrumpdillyicious! We all had [smurf] blue tongues and teeth after we were done.
IMG_4209
Knox couldn't wait to tear into his presents ~ best part of the party for the birthday boy
IMG_4211
He had a great time opening his gifts
IMG_4221
IMG_4222
He even endured the reading of the birthday cards
IMG_4223
But who needs cards….
IMG_4227
….when it’s so much fun to see what’s inside that birthday wrapping paper
IMG_4228
IMG_4237
While Knox surveyed his loot gifts….
IMG_4240
….the adults tried to figure out how to put the toys together ~ once they figured out how to get them out of the box
IMG_4242
Motorized T Rex shot darts and was way cool as he walked along the table. Knox received many most excellent gifts and was pleased with them all. He enjoyed every second of his 3rd birthday and probably won’t sleep at all tonight.

Happy Birthday, Knox!! You are such a bright spot in our family, so full of personality and fun to be with. Granny and Grandpa love you so very much!! [thanks for sharing this great picture, Kelly ~ that face says it all]

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

"Give me the end of the year an' its fun
When most of the plannin' an' toilin' is done;
Bring all the wanderers home to the nest,
Let me sit down with the ones I love best,
Hear the old voices still ringin' with song,
See the old faces unblemished by wrong,
See the old table with all of its chairs
An' I'll put soul in my Thanksgivin' prayers."

IMG_4093
Daughter Kelly, son in law Kerry and grandson Knox hosted our Thanksgiving dinner again this year. Their hundred year old house has plenty of room for [most] of our clan.
IMG_4096
There were 15 at the dinner this year ~ two tables ~ no waiting
IMG_4098
My brother in law Don is a most excellent cook and made the turkey gravy like my mom used to make it ~ in a heavy cast iron skillet ~ it was delicious
IMG_4103
Laughter is always a by-product of our get-togethers ~ niece Sarah, daughter Holly, granddaughter Shelby and niece Julia ~ wonder what they’re laughing about
IMG_4109
Don’s gravy and my sister Jane’s to-die-for sweet potato casserole
IMG_4112
Our Thanksgiving Feast ~ my sister Ann makes awesome dressing and broccoli casserole ~ Don slow roasted that delicious turkey ~ I made garlic grit casserole and fruit salad ~ Holly made her yummy deviled eggs
IMG_4117
IMG_4119
IMG_4120
IMG_4121
Kelly is a blur in this pic, on the move ~ I’m sure she and Kerry are totally tuckered out after all their preparations for this dinner
IMG_4122
At the “kid table” ~ grandson Knox waiting for some food, Sarah, Julia, Shelby and grandson Elijah
IMG_4126
In our family, this is the meaning of “stuffing”
IMG_4127
They all did look up from their plates long enough for a nice group shot ~ okay, you can go back to stuffing your faces now, thanks ~ around the left table: brother in law Terry, sister Ann, sister Jane, hubby Neil, brother in law Don and son in law Jerry. Around the table on the right: daughter Holly, grandson Knox, daughter Kelly, son in law Kerry, niece Sarah, niece Julia, granddaughter Shelby and grandson Elijah
IMG_4128
It’s no secret that Holly’s favorite part of the turkey is the leg
IMG_4129
She totally destroyed this one and thought nothing of it because it was so good
IMG_4132
We ran out of clean forks so Ann used the next best thing ~ one of Knox’s baby forks ~ it got the job done ~ by the way, we enjoyed some great desserts ~ Shelby made a killer caramel apple Snickers pie
IMG_4134
Like mother like daughter ~ Kelly probably didn’t think I’d post her selfie ~ we were either singing or yelling for help
IMG_4135
Sitting around the table, talking and laughing, after that enormous meal ~ I don’t think anybody could move
IMG_4137
Sarah found a comfy spot and so did Knox
IMG_4141
The clean-up crew ~ you’re a good man, Kerry ~ thanks for all your hard prep and clean up work
IMG_4144
When we finally forced ourselves to move away from the tables, we bundled up and went for a cold walk around the neighborhood ~ the girls thawed out in front of the fire when we got back ~ there was snow in our forecast and the overcast sky did spit a few flakes at us
IMG_4146
Don asked his daughter Julia to bring him a “small” piece of pumpkin pie ~ be careful what you ask for
IMG_4149
When we weren’t eating or watching football, we played some games like Apples To Apples which is always fun ~ and then we ate some more. A delicious good time was had by all. I’m so blessed to be a part of the best family on the planet and thankful for the time we got to spend together today. Thank you again, Kelly and Kerry, for hosting our amazing feast! And as always we give God the glory for His rich blessings, today and every day. Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

"I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins
and much too much stuffin',
I'm probably going to die.
I piled up my plate
and I ate and I ate,
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams,
sauces, gravies, and jams
that my buttons are starting to pop.
I'm full of tomatoes
and french fried potatoes,
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert,
so I guess it won't hurt
if I eat just a little bit more."
